If you are a Social Studies educator with experience leading professional development, a passion for Social Studies and strong communication and organization skills and you are ready for an opportunity to serve and give back to the profession -- consider running for a seat on the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is responsible for developing and advancing the mission and goals of NYSCSS. Board members support the VP Member Outreach in their role as Convention Planning Committee Chair. Each member of our Board of Directors has leadership responsibilities, and serve as liaisons to NYSCSS Committees and the membership. Directors are volunteers. If there is a contested nomination, directors are elected by the NYSCSS general membership. The NYSCSS Board of Directors is described as a “working Board.” The Board meets monthly via Zoom during the school year. We meet bi-weekly from mid-January through March during peak Convention planning session. We usually have 1-2 in-person weekend retreat meetings during the year. Terms of office run July 1- June 30. Nominations for officer positions on the Board of Directors open the day after the last day of the Annual Convention. In order to be eligible to serve as a director on the board of directors, the individual must be 18 years of age and a current member of NYSCSS in good standing. A current member of NYSCSS in good standing is defined as being an active (paid) member for one calendar year prior to the date of the nomination period (3/9/26). For more detailed information on the responsibility of the Board of Directors, consult the The New York State Council for the Social Studies By-Laws. Nominations for Officers of the Board of Directors are open through May 23, 2026. Information about submitting a nomination is available here.
