The New York State Council for the Social Studies By-Laws outline the requirements for being elected to the Board of Directors and holding an office on the Board of Directors.  Directors are volunteers and are elected by the NYSCSS general membership to serve two year terms. Officers also serve a two-year term of office and may not serve more than four (4) consecutive terms of office, unless unanimously approved for nomination by the board to waive or to fill a vacancy in an officer position.   The terms of individuals currently holding three Board of Directors seats and Officer positions expire June 30, 2024.  

Nominations for three officer positions on the Board of Directors

open March 11, 2024 and close May 13, 2024. 


All Board of Directors offices are volunteer positions.


Requirements

  • Active (paid) member for one calendar year prior to the date of the nomination period.  All officers of the corporation must additionally have previous experience as either a Board of Directors or Advisory Panel member. 
  • Attendance at monthly Board meetings is required.


Submit the following documents:

  • A position statement identifying the position you are running for and what makes you an ideal candidate.

  • A resume/CV.

  • A headshot (photo) for inclusion on the ballot.

Board of Directors seats and Officer positions with terms

beginning July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026: 


President 

The Board President shall be the chief officer of the corporation. The Board President shall lead the Board of Directors in performing its duties and responsibilities, including, if present, presiding at all meetings of the Board of Directors, and shall perform all other duties incident to the office or properly required.   The candidate must have been a NYSCSS Board member prior to this nomination. 

Vice President of Policy and Administration 

The Vice President of Policy & Administration will assist in matters of the affiliate local and national councils and organizations, and will oversee committees as assigned by the President.

Secretary 

The Secretary shall keep or cause to be kept organized minutes of all meetings and actions of directors and committees of directors.  The Secretary shall cause notice to be given of all meetings of directors and committees as required by the Bylaws. The Secretary shall have such other powers and perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the Board or Board President. The Secretary may appoint, with approval of the Board, a director to assist in performance of all or part of the duties of the Secretary. Additionally, the Secretary shall oversee or serve on committees as assigned by the President.
