This workshop will focus on the historical thinking skills needed for the new Framework U.S. History & Government Regents exam through the lens of the Women's Suffrage Movement. Presenters, Dr. Jennifer Lemak, Chief Curator of History, Ms. Ashley Hopkins-Benton, Senior Historian and Curator, Social History and Mr. James Jenkins, Museum Instructor from the New York State Museum will unpack the rich histories of the documents while providing strategies for teaching historical context, relationships, sourcing, reliability, and civic literacy to students.  Teachers will receive tasks aligned to Parts II and III of the new U.S. History and Government Regents Exam.

South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is interested in learning about your experiences in teaching social studies. They are particularly interested in the inclusion of Korea in your teaching. We are dipping our toes into the virtual webinar world. We are excited to have April Francis coming to speak with us via Zoom about Teaching Hard History.  While it’s a topic always worthy of revisiting for Social Studies teachers, keeping the conversation going and hearing from voices outside our own region we hope will give attendees some new food for thought about best practices in such challenging times. The workshop has no cost for members in good standing (dues are up-to-date). For non-members the only cost is to become a member.

The Department of History at SUNY Geneseo has commissioned research to help understand how and where secondary social studies teachers in New York State fulfill their master's degree requirement. If you're a secondary teacher who received a bachelor's degree between 2016 and 2020, the researchers would like you to answer a few questions about your undergraduate and graduate education. Your anonymous responses will be used to inform SUNY Geneseo's history department as it considers changes to its curriculum. The survey should only take about 2-3 minutes to complete. Journey through German history . The trip begins in the Rhineland and takes us from the ancient Romans to the Middle Ages of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the Northern Renaissance and the Reformation and its effects, Goethe and Schiller and Frederick the Great as well as the Napoleonic period. Finally, we come to modern times with the world wars of the twentieth century, the Holocaust, German division and reunification. We will also explore art, music and architecture. All this is to be conveyed and experienced through city tours, visits to churches, synagogues, museums and memorials, as well as lectures and discussions. This is the ideal trip for AP European History teachers and those who just want to learn more about the rich history of Germany.

"Holocaust and Human Rights“ Trip through Germany and Poland

July 21-August 04, 2019

This educational trip takes us from the Third Reich and the Holocaust, through the communist dictatorships in the GDR and Poland with the Stasi and the peaceful revolution in Germany and Solidarity movement in Poland, to contemporary issues of migration, discrimination, antisemitism and Islamophobia. All this is conveyed and reflected through guided tours to original sites, memorials and monuments, museums, educational institutions and interactive workshops. The journey also offers time for an intensive exchange between the participants and reflections on what they have experienced, and how to teach historical events and human rights today and how to sensitize and enable students to defend themselves against injustice, There will be also opportunity for individual discovery of both Germany and Poland.

About the presenter:

Christine Radez is the Social Studies Associate in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction where she provides expertise to school administrators, teachers and parents on the NYS K-12 Social Studies Framework and the Regents assessments.  Prior to this she was an instructional administrator at the SUNY HVCC Educational Opportunity Center.  Christine was a classroom teacher for fifteen years and taught both on Long Island and in rural upstate at the high school level.
