A Symposium: The Global Nação: The Spanish and Portuguese Global Jewish Community Mon May 11, Tue May 12, Wed May 13, 2020 

The Center for Jewish History (Tue & Wed), Congregation Shearith Israel (Mon) Manhattan 

DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS: ~ The American Sephardi Federation Institute of Jewish Experience's 3rd annual conference will focus on Western Sephardi (Spanish & Portuguese) traditions in their historical and modern-day contexts through an examination of the history, religious leaders, customs, liturgy, literature, arts, and material culture. ~ The conference will open with a liturgical concert featuring cantors from around the world, hosted by Congregation Shearith Israel. ~ The following day and a half will include sessions at the Center for Jewish History with scholars, artists, & community leaders from around the world. ~ Tuesday’s Program will begin with an introduction to Spanish & Portuguese Sephardi Culture end with a performance/presentation by a scholar in Judaic music from Spain before the expulsion. ~ On Wed the conference will end with an off-site tour of Shearith Israel’s first cemetery.
