A democratic society requires an educated electorate. But how can a social studies teacher compete with the tsunami of information – and misinformation – that can so easily overwhelm even the most experienced news consumer? The answer is to give students the news literacy tools they need to determine if what they are looking at is reliable, and whether they can responsibly act on it. The practice of news literacy is even more urgent in an election season, when our students might get the idea that spouting insults or bits of unverified information is the civic norm.  Join Janis Schachter for some tips, and some commiseration, for the work ahead.

Janis Schachter has taught social studies for 29 years, in both private and public school, and in middle and high school.  For more than a decade, Janis taught Stony Brook University’s News Literacy program to her secondary students at Northport High School, Long Island, NY.   In 2020, Janis was the NYSCSS's distinguished educator.  In 2021, Janis was honored with the silver-level Schurz Press Freedom Teacher Award from the Global Youth & News Media.

The webinar is sponsored by the NYSCSS High School Committee.
