Part I: How to use Special Education strategies for all learners: unlocking high level texts with Laura Mecca-Retzlaff

The session will focus on reading and writing skills and strategies that will cover techniques that have been adapted from various sources including the Stanford History Education Group, New Visions for Public Schools, The OER Project and classroom experiences of success. The techniques to address reading skills development will include use of color when reading and analyzing documents/text, making the process of analyzing documents tactile, and using visual inquiry as an equalizer for students of varied reading levels. Writing skills will emphasize inclusion of pre-writing organizers to promote more analytical, descriptive and detailed writing. The session will also provide an understanding of common testing accommodations and program modifications of students with disabilities and why students with disabilities need these things to be more successful on assessments. Participants will also learn how these testing accommodations and program modifications apply specifically to social studies classrooms and assessments. The goal of this session is to provide practical and reality-based assistance to social studies classroom teachers
