Pre-Service Teacher Night-March 9th, 2022

Crowne Plaza Albany-Desmond Hotel-4:00-8:00 PM

Part I-The evening discussions will focus on the interview process, pre/post Covid impact on teaching, first-year survival skills, and settling into your new teaching position.  

Part II-A“make and take” session centered on making your future classes more primary source friendly. Presenters will share historical thinking strategies to bolster student engagement. 

This will be an interactive evening and a great opportunity for all preservice teachers across the state.

Registration Fee is $35*

*Attendees will receive:

  • Light dinner served with plenty of food available 

  • Free attendance to the 2022 NYSCSS Conference

  • 1-year membership from beginning March 1, 2022:

    • NYSCSS New York State Council for Social Studies 

    • CDCSS Capital District Council for Social Studies

Registration information:

Preservice teachers can register for the annual convention at a discounted rate of $35.00, which includes the March 9th preservice event (light dinner, discussions, presentation, interview practice) and conference attendance (Thursday-Saturday-March 10-12, 2022).  

Online registration deadline is Monday, March 7, 2022. 

For preservice teachers to take advantage of this great discount, they need to be students in undergraduate, or graduate programs, and not employed with a district or other educationally related full-time position. If unsure, please contact Tim Potts

4:10-4:30   Introduction and Mission-Dr. Kristi Fragnoli

4:10-4:20   Opening Statements by NYSCSS leadership-Dr. Kristin Fragnoli & Tim Potts 

4:20-4:30    Structure of the evening-How to get the most out of pre-service 2022

4:30-5:30   Pre-Service Roundtable Interviews & Discussion

How to get an interview, resumes, cover letters, OLAS vs. direct contact, etc.

Roundtable conversations & interview questions.

Teaching careers in a 2022 world. Will the teacher shortage help in getting a position? 

5:30-6:15   Refreshments- Meet and Greet Mixer 

(All round table interviewers will mix with pre-service candidates for networking)

6:15-8:00   Historical Thinking Classrooms-Tim Potts & Rich Strum 

Through interactive lesson plan activities the presenters will share some “open the school year activities” to engage your future students with.  Lesson ideas will go beyond the basics with primary sources for your students and will assist you in developing an organic “teacher mindset” when it comes to acquiring primary sources and how to develop lessons deeply instead of just exposure.
