How do we assess instruction based on the NYS K-12 Social Studies Framework?

Join us from Monday, July 18 – Wednesday, July 20, 2016 for an intensive three-day summer institute offering an “A-to-Z Framework experience” at The Desmond Hotel in Albany (Wolf Road).

Building off of our highly successful 2015 Summer Institute on the NYS K-12 Social Studies Toolkit Project, the 2016 Institute will focus on teacher-led methods of teaching and assessing the Social Studies Practices outlined in the new K-12 Social Studies Framework. You will learn about, design, and share strategies, resources, and methods that focus on the Framework’s Inquiry Arc.

At the end of each day (Monday and Tuesday), you will develop sample assessment items based on one or more Social Studies Practices. On the final day (Wednesday), you will receive feedback on and have time to revise your assessment items for classroom use. This is a comprehensive experience to sharpen your own classroom assessment practice!

MEMBERSHIP: Required to attend the institute. Non-member registration includes NYSCSS Membership for one (1) calendar year. Please click here to learn about our various membership options.

PAYMENT:  All payments can be made online through our PayPal link using a bank account transaction, debit card, or credit card. When the transaction is completed, you will receive an e-mail invoice confirming payment. You do not need to have a PayPal account to use this option.

Payments by personal check and purchase order/district check are also available. Please send your personal check or purchase order to:

SCHOOL/ORGANIZATION PAYING YOUR COSTS?: If your registration costs are being paid by an organization with a credit or debit card, each individual's registration must be done separately. Since this will require personnel in your business office to have access to your personal NYSCSS account (for current NYSCSS members only), we suggest you change your member password before and after such payment. If your school or organization is paying by check or purchase order, please make certain that that the names of attendees being paid for are written on documents accompanying the mailed check or purchase order. A school or organization contact person (with phone and e-mail address) should be identified on the purchase order.

We provide a certificate of attendance for all attendees.

Complimentary breakfast is included with your registration. As an Institute participant, you can take advantage of a reduced room rate at The Desmond of $109 per night if you choose to stay on site (use group code 10264).

All paid registrations must be received by Friday, July 8, 2016.

For questions about purchase orders, please contact NYSCSS Treasurer Tim Potts at treasurer@nyscss.org or (845) 796-3058 ext. 20618. Please note that after June 24, 2016, Mr. Potts will not be in district so email is the best form of communication.
