A Professional Development Course for Secondary Teachers

The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) at the Program for Teaching East Asia,
University of Colorado Boulder, announces a new online seminar,

 “Teaching about China’s Political System.” Co-developed by political scientists with expertise on China in consultation with AP Comparative Government teachers, this 20-hour seminar addresses instructional objectives of the AP Comparative Government course and provides essential background to all teachers covering contemporary China in their courses. The seminar is open to secondary teachers nationwide. Preference will be given to teachers who are teaching courses that include the study of China’s government.

Online Format: The seminar will be conducted entirely through asynchronous online modules, each consisting of video lectures with China specialists, pertinent readings, and content and pedagogy discussions with master teachers, colleagues, and specialists. Contingent upon registration, a separate discussion section may be offered to meet the interests of AP Comparative Government teachers. 

The course consists of five online modules: Considering China; Sovereignty, Authority & Power; Political Institutions; Citizens, Society & the State; Political & Economic Change.

Seminar Dates: The seminar will commence on September 24 with online introductions. The first module will begin September 30, and the final module will conclude December 8. A final paper and evaluation will be due December 14. Each module will be open for participant completion for two weeks.
Participation is free, with the following benefits and expectations:
 20 contact hours of study and discussion with China specialists and fellow educators;
 2 graduate credits (with additional fee) or Certificate of Completion for 20 hours;
 Course materials;
 $100 participant stipend upon satisfactory completion of the seminar;
 Eligibility for NCTA enrichment summer programs, including study tours to East Asia (pending funding);
 Participants agree to participate in the full 20 hour course & complete a final paper and evaluation.
