Join us from Monday - Wednesday, July 8-10, 2019 at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center for our 5th annual intensive three-day NYSCSS Summer Institute-Social Studies Now! Sessions will focus on:

Social Studies Skills and Practices

Civic Action

Media/Social Media Literacy

Teaching to ALL student populations, including Elementary, Secondary, English Language Learners and Special Education students, will be emphasized throughout the Institute.

NYSED Social Studies Associates will also present sessions on the latest news and updates for Social Studies Education and Assessment.

We will continue to focus on using the New York State Social Studies Curriculum Framework to plan instruction and acquiring new strategies to scaffold instruction for all learners including students receiving ELL and Special Education services. During the Institute, we will discuss current practices for effective instruction in the special education and ELL classroom.  

NYSCSS MEMBERSHIP: Required to attend the institute. Non-member registration includes NYSCSS membership for one (1) calendar year. Please visit our membership page to learn about our various membership options.

PAYMENT:  All payments can be made online through our PayPal link using a bank account transaction, debit card, or credit card. When the transaction is completed, you will receive an e-mail invoice confirming payment. You do not need to have a PayPal account to use this option. Please scroll fully down the screen to see the Paypal portal to use your debit or credit card without signing up for a Paypal account.

SCHOOL/ORGANIZATION PAYING YOUR COSTS?: If your registration costs are being paid by an organization with a credit or debit card, each individual's registration must be done separately via our website.  Since this may require personnel in your business office to have access to your personal NYSCSS account (for current NYSCSS members only), we suggest you change your member password before and after such payment. If your school or organization is paying by check or purchase order, please make certain that that the names of attendees being paid for are written on ALL documents accompanying the mailed check or purchase order. Your registration will be delayed if your names does not appear on the purchase order and corresponding documents. A school or organization contact person (with phone and e-mail address) should be identified on the purchase order.


We will provide a CTLE certificate of attendance for all attendees who complete the workshop. Certificates will not be released early for any reason.  You must attend all sessions to receive your certificate.

Complimentary breakfast is included with your registration. Lunch choices will be available for purchase throughout the Institute.

As an Institute participant, you can take advantage of a reduced room rate at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center of $109.00 per night if you choose to stay on site.  If calling the Desmond please use the code "NYC" when you reserve your hotel room directly. All registrations must be received by Monday, June 24, 2019 either paid via Paypal, personal check, or purchase order with forthcoming district check. If you are using a purchase order it must be on file by 5:00 PM Monday June 24, 2019 ready for invoicing or you will be de-registered from the Institute. If your district requires payment after the Institute is over you may still register, but the purchase order must be on file by 5:00 PM Monday, June 24, 2019.

REFUND POLICY: For a full refund, please e-mail your cancellation notice by Monday, June 24, 2019 to treasurer@nyscss.org. Sorry, refunds cannot be processed after this date. There are NO exceptions. Please note if you cancel after the June 24, 2019 cut-off date we will bill your district the purchase order on file as it is a promise to pay. There are many associated costs related to putting on a council event and canceling beyond June 24, 2019 is not permissible for a refund.
